Hawk banding in the Antelope Valley, California January 13th 2007

Scott, Pete and his team had already captured several hawks when we met at 7 am.
The hawks were weighed and banded then released in the same area that they were captured.
Scott Thomas with Ferruginous Hawk.
Note the wide mouth on this hawk. Unlike most hawks, Ferruginous Hawks swallow their prey whole. They kill they prey instantly by striking with both feet. This way they don't struggle going down.
